How to read Illinois hail sizes

  • 1" (quarter) — the NWS severe threshold. Enough to dent soft metal and bruise shingles.
  • 1.75" (golf ball) — widespread vehicle dents and the size that usually opens PDR work.
  • 2.5"+ (tennis ball and up) — roof fractures, broken glass and full-scale catastrophe deployments.
